Frequently Asked Questions

Weather in Scotland

Scotland's weather is famously unpredictable and changeable. From April to September, temperatures typically range from 5°C to 27°C (low 40's to low 80's Fahrenheit). Similar to the Pacific Northwest in the USA, we can experience multiple seasons in a single day! Our winters can vary dramatically from year to year - mild enough for palm trees to grow on the West Coast, or cold enough for Arctic-like conditions. The key is to be prepared for all weather conditions.

What clothing should we bring?

We recommend a "layered" approach to clothing:

  • Waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes are essential

  • Light layers (t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts)

  • Warm sweater or fleece

  • Light scarf or neck warmer

  • Waterproof trousers (optional but recommended)

  • Sturdy walking shoes or boots (waterproof recommended)

  • Casual evening wear for restaurants

  • Swimming costume if interested in wild swimming

  • Sun protection (yes, even in Scotland!)

  • Small umbrella

Laundry facilities

Most hotels and B&Bs offer laundry services, though these can be expensive. For longer stays, we can direct you to local laundromats in larger towns. We recommend packing enough clothes for 5-7 days and planning to do laundry if your stay extends beyond this.

Money

  • Most places accept major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard most widely accepted)

  • ATMs are readily available in towns and cities

  • We recommend carrying some cash for small purchases and rural areas

  • Inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid card issues

  • Current exchange rates can be checked online

  • Most rural pubs and small shops prefer cash

Tipping in Scotland is entirely discretionary. While not mandatory, tips are always appreciated as a recognition of exceptional service:

  • Hotel porters: Optional for luggage assistance

  • Tour guides: While never expected, tips are always appreciated if you feel you've received exceptional service
